Selection Criteria

The Columbia Distinguished Fellows program is designed for accomplished leaders with track records of innovation and achievement throughout their primary careers. A typical Fellow will have had at least two decades of senior-level leadership and responsibility in the private, public, or non-profit sectors, with demonstrated recognition or distinction in chosen fields; Fellows likely are nearing the end of one set of professional engagements or have recently reduced their work schedule to make room for full-time academic engagement.

Candidates for the program are motivated to embrace a year of rigorous academic learning and renewal, grappling with topics from history and classics to current events and issues, while recognizing the value that engagement across NYC and Columbia's campus can add as they prepare for their next chapter.

For the inaugural cohort in Fall 2027, we expect to be joined on campus by up to 15-25 Fellows, growing the cohort to a steady state of about fifty. Given the desire to attract Fellows with significant leadership experience, we anticipate the younger of the Fellows will be in their early to mid 50s. We anticipate that many joining the cohort will be newly retired or taking a year long hiatus/ sabbatical before a career change.

Selection Process + Timeline

The application process will begin with a short online application asking for biographical information and details regarding professional background (including a resume/ CV). For priority consideration, complete the first phase of the application by November 15, 2026; candidates will be notified about advancement on a rolling basis.

Candidates advanced to a second round will be asked to prepare a more in-depth application with short essays detailing motivations for entering a year of academic exploration as well as what they hope to gain from the program. A short professional or personal reference will also be required from someone who can speak to the candidate’s character and perceived readiness for the program. The admissions committee will begin reviewing applications in mid-December and will continue inviting Fellows to an interview until spots are filled.

Program leadership will interview finalists starting in January; final admissions decisions will be sent no later than April 2027.

There are no formal educational requirements necessary for inclusion in the cohort. Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement for full engagement in all program and Columbia courses.
